Finding Affordable Housing
There are three venues into affordable housing:
1. Long-term affordable housing includes co-operatives, subsidized housing and non-profit housing. Long-term affordable housing is different than market housing, as the tenant-landlord relationship is usually a tenant-agency relationship. Each long term affordable housing option has its own application procedure.
2. Temporary housing comprises of transition homes and emergency shelters for individuals and families who need immediate housing facilities. The period in which an individual can stay within a temporary housing facility varies between the agencies. Temporary housing can provide shelter for individuals and families in their transition period before they find permanent housing.
3. There are certain subsidies and supplements available to low-income residents. Renters may apply for these programs to help them keep their home affordable. The rental assistance page provides a list of some of these programs.
